What does Class A fire rating mean and how is it tested?

A Class A fire rating represents the highest rating achievable. It indicates a flame spread of 0-25 and smoke development of 0-45.

The ASTM E2768 is used to test surface burning characteristics and takes place in a Steiner Tunnel.

The test gathers data to determine the fire rating classification. Some of the data that is recorded:
Flame Spread for the first 10 minutes
Maximum Flame Front Distance
Smoke Developed Index for the first 10 minutes
Time to Ignition
Flame Spread Distance vs. Time
Maximum Flame Spread Distance
Temperature vs. Time
Time to Maximum Temperature

Our Results

When testing Southern Yellow Pine, our treatment was able to achieve a Flame Spread Index (FSI) of 10 with a Maximum Flame Front of 9.4 feet at the 30-minute mark.

Typically, Southern Yellow Pine has an FSI value ranging between 130 and 230. This places untreated SYP in Class C or Class III according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard
